Sabbath School

Sabbath School is the heart of the church and its mission is to provide religious

education systems and materials to Sabbath School members thereby building their faith

and practice.

The fundamental purposes of the Sabbath School are:

  • Study of the Word

  • Fellowship

  • Community Outreach

  • World Mission Emphasis

Reasons for Leaving a Sabbath School

Research has shown that individuals leave the church for a number of different reasons:

  • The Pastor

  • Programmes

  • Members

Research has also shown that persons attend church for a number of different reasons.Notwithstanding the reason, individuals should not leave church with the same attitude that they came with; hence the treatment bestowed on both members and visitors plays an important role in one’s spiritual as well as physical development.

In searching for a church to attend regularly, a lady visited a church one Sabbath and she decided to go early in order to get a good seat. She got there before 9:00 a.m. and took a seat at a location near the door in a row where there was no indication that someone was sitting before. (There was no bags or books on the entire bench).

The church was practically empty except for a group that was meeting at the front of the church. While she was sitting there someone came and placed a bag on the bench and the individual proceeded to join the others in the Lesson Review for Sabbath School Teachers which was being conducted at the front of the church.

At the end of the review, (before 9:15 a.m.) she was surprised as a member came to her and told her that she was sitting in her seat.

This visitor and her family had to remove and find another bench. During the Sabbath School, the Care Coordinator for the unit, gave her a warm welcome and encouraged her to come again and join the Sabbath School class. The Discussion Facilitator (class teacher), did a remarkable job in sharing the lesson and he too made the effort to ensure that as a visitor she was welcomed and encouraged to visit again and also to be a part of the Action Unit. Unfortunately, not being a member and not being converted, the visitor found it difficult to get the first impression out of her head – that of being told “you are in my seat” so she left that Sabbath, prayed for the Lord to show her the church she should become a member of.

Many persons attend church each week and leave without anyone saying hello to them, they leave without anyone giving them a smile, they leave without anyone asking how their week was, and they leave without anyone praying with them.

In order to alleviate these and other issues that members face, the Sabbath School Department has encouraged all the churches to participate in the Action Unit Plan.

What are Action Units?

Action Units are groups of eight to twelve (8-12) members with a unit leader/ care coordinator in charge of the group. As the groups are small, it is easy for one person to monitor and coordinate activities geared towards the growth and well-being of the members. When executed properly the action units will facilitate the following:

  • In reach

  • Out reach

  • Fellowship

  • Study of the Word

At Tent City, through the action units, every Sabbath the members are cared for and prayed for. Some units also participate in weekly cottage meetings and occasionally they have fellowship lunch.   In addition, the church identifies activities/projects for the units to undertake thereby ensuring that they are acquainted with each other and the needs of the church are taken care of at the same time.

The Sabbath School Department also works closely with the Personal Ministries Department to accomplish its mandate as stated in Matt. 28:19: “Go ye therefore and teach all nations…”
